The Cancer Prevention Program: Who We Are

Columbia Weill Cornell Cancer Centers offer a comprehensive range of services that combine the expertise of two premier academic medical institutions. A full continuum of cancer care from prevention and early detection through diagnosis and treatment is available. As a multidisciplinary institution, we can also identify, coordinate and treat any other medical concerns while you address your cancer concerns.

The Cancer Prevention Program focuses on prevention and screening services. Building on our extensive research and clinical expertise, we have developed programs to help you reduce your risks of developing cancer. Our programs cover a range of concerns:

  • Primary prevention—designed to prevent the occurrence of cancer
  • Secondary prevention—to identify those at increased risk for the disease and screen for early signs/stages, when cure is more likely
  • Tertiary prevention—to monitor for and prevent recurrence of cancer

We know that many cancers can be prevented through diet and lifestyle changes. Other cancers can be successfully treated if they are detected early. The most common cancers for which screening tests are available include breast, gynecological, skin, lung, colorectal and prostate. Regular screening is essential for early detection. The range of services offered by Columbia Weill Cornell Cancer Centers includes:

  • Routine screening exams
  • High risk evaluations
  • Chemoprevention (the use of drugs to prevent cancer in high-risk patients)
  • Genetic testing and counseling
  • Nutritional counseling
  • Lung screening for smokers and ex-smokers
  • Smoking cessation programs
