Research Scientists Educate Congressional Staff on New Treatment Advances

Appearing before House and Senate staff members at Capitol Hill at a special health briefing on cancer, on June 18, Dr. Andrew Dannenberg of NewYork Weill Cornell Medical Center, had one key point to make -- the war on cancer can be won if we fight carcinogenesis and not just cancer.

Exciting work is being done in the laboratories of Drs. Tony Brown and Alvaro Monteiro.

A FUNCTIONAL ASSAY FOR BRCA1-

Women who have a significant family history of breast and ovarian cancer can have their DNA tested to determine whether they are at increased risk. Functional tests of the BRCA1 proteins encoded by that individual’s genes may provide crucial information that will assist Genetic Counselors in the interpretation of those DNA tests.

 

MUTATION ANALYSIS IN MOUSE MODELS OF COLON CANCER

Mouse strains offer great potential for evaluating prevention strategies that may reduce the incidence of colon cancer in humans with genetic predisposition to the disease.
