CT
Scan Lung Cancer Screening Tests
The
Academic Medicine Development Corporation (AMDeC) is a consortium
of all the major medical schools and most of the major hospitals
in New York City. Headed by Dr. Maria Mitchell, its goal is to
increase biomedical funding of research at the major academic
medical centers in New York. Its most recent large-scale project
builds upon the outstanding research work of Dr. Claudia Henschke
and her collaborators in the Department of Radiology at Weill
Cornell.
AMDeC
will provide funding for 10,000 spiral CT scan lung cancer screening
tests to be performed. This will allow Dr. Henschke and her collaborators
to study the potential benefits of this screening test on a much
larger sample than they have previously accrued. Screening of
2,000 smokers and former smokers over the age of 60 will be undertaken
at both campuses of NYPH, with 1,000 to be screened at Columbia-Presbyterian
under the leadership of Dr. John Austin, and an additional 1,000
at Weill-Cornell. The other scans will be performed at other hospitals
throughout the City, with all the data to be accumulated and analyzed
by the NYPH investigators.
Also
working on this project are Drs. Nasser Altorki, Douglas Flieder,
Daniel Libby Alfred Neugut, Mark Pasmantier, Charles Powell, Anthony
Reeves, Regina Santella, James P. Smith, Madeline Vazquez, and
David Yankelevitz.
